Friction
Shonti Elder Copyright 1990

My love and I live a life
Of separate days and shared dreams
It wasn’t how it used to be,
But we’re happy as it seems
We share each other’s sorrows
And help each other laugh
Our secret is no secret love
We just want what we have

Chor: There may always be differences
But that don’t mean a thing
‘Cause it’s the friction of the bow
           That makes the violin sing

He’s my sweetest company
He’s my dearest friend
We drink from a well so deep
We know it never ends
Both of us have kept our wings
And stretched them in the wind
Funny how our flying leads
Back to home again

Chor:

Our arms are for supporting
And not for holding down
When I’m lost and lonely
He wraps his love around
I’ll do everything I can
To help him grow and be
The person that he is inside
Alive and feeling free.

Sleepless Baby Blues
Shonti Elder Copyright 1990

I don’t ask much, I’d just like to sleep all night
To sleep ‘til morning, sweet dreams would be so right
I pull up the covers and try to keep warm
The man at my side is snoring up a storm
The cat’s gonna jump on my head pretty soon
The dog’s in the backyard, howling at the moon
And I wonder if I’m ever gonna, ever gonna get to sleep again.
Some people tell stories about babies who sleep 'til dawn
But in my baby’s life, there’s not a whole lot of sleeping going on
My baby’s crying, it’s the third time tonight
I know I’ve got to hold her 'til her eyes shut tight
I put her in the crib and try to sneak away
But she jumps up and screams, and all that I can say is
I wonder if I’m ever gonna, ever gonna get to sleep again.

Stop The Clock
Copyright Shonti Elder 1990

Chor: Oh stop the clock, time, time stop your moving hands
Let me hold my baby to my heart
Oh stop your pounding, let’s save this moment
           Time don’t tear us apart

Oh, I’ll try to be there when you wake up
And I’ll try to keep you from too much pain
Delight in your smiles, your joy and laughter
Let’s stay inside this moment as long as we can
You’ll never be this small again.

Chor:

There are moments when I can’t stop your crying
I’m sorry to be so helpless with you
Your tears start my tears, until that sweet moment
When you calm down and smile
Your smile lights up the world
And I’m honored that you’re my sweet girl

Chor:

Well you’ll grow up and then you won’t need me
When your world gets bigger you’ll be harder to hold
I’ll only be your mother and you’ll be embarrassed
That I still need your company with all of my soul
I’ll always need my baby to hold

Chor:

Missing A Man
Copyright Shonti Elder 1990

There’s probably more fun in the next place in town
Probably a better time to be around
Maybe a man to deal the next round
She’s restless and can’t find her way
She says that she can’t stand being alone
She stays in the city, afraid to roam
Well the countryside’s calling, but she’s too tired to go
She needs a direction this day

Chor: And she knows that she’s lonely and can’t seem to rest
She wonders if romance is some kind of test
But all of her friends realize that, I guess
Missing a man is what she does best

Sometimes it’s Peter and sometimes it’s Paul
It hurts her too much to remember them all
She holds herself close and she looks at the sky
Unhappy, she knows it, but why?
All of her friends try to show her the light
The music, the laughter, the wild birds in flight
They try to believe everything comes out right
But she can’t bring herself to let go

Chor:

She says all she wants is a husband to stay
To hold her and love her and be there each day
But she judges so harshly the ones on the way
And the ones that she wants don’t want her
She dresses so fancy and goes on her dates
Another fine menu, another heartache
And what do they want, well she’s given her all
And it’s hard to get up in the morning

Chor:

No Car In the Parking Lot
Copyright Shonti Elder 1990

I go to the market to get a little food to eat
I take both my children. Maybe they can have a treat
I buy all the groceries, a lot more than I thought
All these bags, no car in the parking lot
All these bags, no car in the parking lot

The boy at the counter, he carries some bags for me
We go to the front door, these bags are so heavy
We come to the parking lot, but where I parked I forgot.
All these bags, no car in the parking lot
All these bags, no car in the parking lot

We go to the left, and a bag begins to break
The boy he is angry, he says I make him late
The children are fighting, but my car I see not
All these bags, no car in the parking lot
All these bags, no car in the parking lot

Now it is raining, and the sun it has gone down
The boy he has left me, and bags are all around
The children are crying, but my car I have not found
All these bags, no car in the parking lot
All these bags, no car in the parking lot
All these bags, no car in the parking lot

Family Reunion
Copyright Shonti Elder 1990

Some people turn to families, others turn to friends
The people who you love will get you by
When we come together, it’s not the blood or kin
But the caring for each other
Gives our hearts the ties that bind

Chor: It’ll be a family reunion to celebrate the day
We’ll leave behind our workday cares
           Let them drift away
Bring our lives together to answer friendship’s call
A family reunion for us all

Patterns come too easily, we do things just the same
Go to work too early, come home tired of the game
But loving arms are waiting to hold you in the night
Reaching out to share your life
The home fire’s burning bright

Chor:

Sometimes we live too separately in boxes row by row
With VCR’s. TV’s, CD’s no need for us to go
Outside our little shelters. It’s too easy to stay hid
So go outside and meet your friends
You’ll be glad you did

Chor:
